252701: Sleep and circadian science for health practitioners

This fully online, single‑semester course examines sleep and circadian science in relation to health and healthcare practice. It provides health professionals with a detailed understanding of sleep and circadian physiology in the context of healthy sleep, sleep disorders, and common medical conditions, as well as the role of sleep and circadian health in overall health and waking function.

A strong emphasis is placed on applying scientific knowledge to real‑world healthcare and population contexts. Students are supported to critically reflect on sleep and circadian factors relevant to their professional practice, including challenges associated with shift work and fatigue in healthcare and other workplace settings.

The course is offered once every two years, with the next offering in Semester 1, 2028. It can be completed as part of the Master of Nursing, Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing, or Master of Health Science programmes at Massey University, or taken as a standalone course.

Who should take this course?

This course is designed for health professionals and postgraduate students with an interest in sleep and circadian health in clinical, public health, or healthcare settings. It is particularly suited to nurses, allied health practitioners, public health professionals, and others seeking to strengthen their understanding of sleep and circadian rhythms in relation to patient care and health outcomes.

The course can be completed as part of the Master of Health Science (Occupational Health and Safety) or the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science (Occupational Health and Safety) at Massey University, and may also be taken as a standalone course.

This is a full‑year course, delivered mostly online across Semester 1 and Semester 2. It includes two contact courses during the year: a one‑day online session and a one‑day in‑person session. The course is offered two out of every three years, with the next offering in Semester 1, 2028.
