In our consulting work with industry, we work closely with organisations to translate scientific evidence into practical, workable solutions. By integrating our expertise in sleep, shift work, and fatigue with the knowledge and experience of managers and the workforce, we help develop strategies that are effective, sustainable, and fit for purpose. Where appropriate, we also contribute to advancing best practice by publishing innovative work and findings in the open, peer‑reviewed scientific literature.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015) recognises fatigue as a contributing cause of workplace hazards, and WorkSafe guidance identifies shift work as a key source of fatigue risk. We support organisations to meet their obligations under the Act by helping them identify, assess, and manage fatigue‑ and shift work‑related health and safety risks, using evidence‑based approaches.
A component of our consulting services is the development and delivery of fatigue and shift work management training. We design tailored programmes for workers, managers, governance groups, and other staff whose roles influence fatigue risk, such as schedulers and health and safety personnel. Training can be delivered face‑to‑face or online, through interactive packages, or via train‑the‑trainer models, depending on organisational needs.
Our consulting experience spans a wide range of sectors, including aviation, transport, energy, manufacturing, media, sport, and maritime operations. Clients have included Air New Zealand, Airways NZ, Boeing, BP, British Airline Pilots Association, Delta Air Lines, Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union, Helicopters NZ, High Performance Sport NZ, International Air Transport Association (representing 232 airlines), Interislander, Jetconnect Ltd, KiwiRail, National Airlines Council of Canada, Nexans NZ, NZ Media and Entertainment, Port of Napier, Port Otago, Qantas Airways, Sealord Group, South African Airways, and Wētā Workshop.
