Emily joined the Sleep/Wake Research Centre in 2025 as a doctoral student in the Massey University Doctorate of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych) programme. Her thesis, Supporting Adolescent Mental Health Through Sleep: What Do Adolescents Have to Say?, explores how adolescents aged 16 to 18 from diverse backgrounds in Aotearoa perceive, experience, and make sense of sleep, as well as the types of sleep support they find helpful or unhelpful. Emily recruited forty adolescents (55% Māori, 27.5% New Zealand European, 12.5% Asian, 5% Pacific Peoples) from a socio-demographically diverse high school in the Wellington region and conducted ten semi-structured focus groups. Emily will analyse her data using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Her research aims to inform the development of a tailored, adolescent-centred sleep promotion intervention that is feasible, culturally responsive, contextually relevant, and acceptable for this population.
